Time after time family photographers hear their clients say that they’re worried how their child or children are going to act during their family session. Photography is an investment and parents want great photos of their kids to look back on. No one really wants a framed picture of their two year old during a screaming, crying tantrum.
As we all know, kids will be kids, but there are a few things you can do to make a fun and easy process for your whole family:
Schedule around naps and eating times.
If you have smaller children or infants, this one is for you. Family photography is about your family, so doing things to make it easier for you and your kids will benefit everyone. When scheduling your session, take naps and feeding times in consideration. Or if the session is at a specific time, plan naps and feedings around that. A quick feeding right before the session begins makes a world of a difference.
Have outfits planned out ahead of time.
Outfit prep is by far one of the most stressful parts for families, especially when multiple children are involved. From colors to patterns and what shoes should everyone wear – it can be a lot. Pinterest is a great resource for inspiration on color palettes and the types of clothing to wear based on your location.
Be prepared.
Snacks, water or juice, favorite toys, pacifiers. A selection of familiar or enjoyable items that will calm your kiddo if they start to feel overwhelmed is key. Sometimes a quick break for crackers or cuddling a toy can be what a child needs to feel ready again. It’s also another sweet, authentic moment worth capturing.
Don’t force a smile.
Let your kids be kids. The best pictures are those when picking flowers, reaching for your hand, or running around. Years from now you will remember their personality and all the funny things they said, not whether they posed and smiled for a photo. Remember that this age is only temporary and you’ll eventually appreciate the little moments being captured.
At the end of the day, what matters is having the pictures done. If there are a few tears or crazy faces, that’s okay. Family photography is about capturing your family exactly as they are and appreciating everyone’s own personalities.
